How do you inform a marketer that his/her article lacks “pizzazz?” I don’t believe you can; at least not without ruffling a few feathers.
Though, my job wasn’t to decide if an article had personality; I had to decipher whether or not the article passed the 3-parts text and made enough sense to go live.
I know it’s not easy to write day in and day out and stay upbeat. The toil over prose can make life unbearable; but, letting your hair down and throwing caution to the wind can turn so-so writing into words of engagement!
When clients would tell me they couldn’t write, I would suggest they dictate their thoughts to a machine. I had one client who would speak to her dog; another to her parrot. Once in a while, I’ll write as if I’m chatting with an old school chum.
Whatever it takes to BE YOU – do it! Kick back and relax. Don’t make this writing thing harder than it needs to be. You’re having a simple conversation – it’s just on paper.
Fire up the camera and talk like you would if you were at the mall with a friend and you’re explaining to her the same thing you want to relate to an online audience. Grab Dragon Naturally Speaking and recite into the microphone; whatever works!
Leave the Tech Speak Out
When was the last time you got hooked on a good book that you just couldn’t put down? The fact is, people crave a good story and if you can write one, mixed with educational value, readers will come back for more.
Technical articles lack the personal touch and if you want to gain avid readers and followers, it’s important to be YOU. Articles that are written like a stuffy manual don’t get passed around, but a good story is another matter entirely.
Readers will consume the entire article if you’re willing to include a story so force yourself, if you must, and be different than most article writers!
Consider on making future writing projects an adventure for the reader. You’ll be blessed with newfound friendships, eager readers, and a community of followers who yearn for your messages.
Your turn! Do you write like you speak? Leave a comment and let me know.
