Ask this question on a social media platform and I am certain the replies will vary. However, for the sake of brevity, a podcast is a series of audio files distributed by subscription. We refer to the person who offers the audio recordings as the podcaster.
In the beginning, people listened to podcasts with an iPod, but today you can listen to them using any MP3 player because it’s just an MP3 file once you grab it from the iTunes store.
For the marketer wanting to reach a larger audience, podcasting is the perfect solution. I especially like the idea of reaching people who never read blogs, watch videos or use social media.
Subscribers gain access to your latest audio through iTunes or other compatible software, which delivers each new episode, automatically.
You don’t need to mail the audio as you would do with an email newsletter, and you can easily track the popularity of each episode through your audio host.
Why Should You Podcast?
By sharing a podcast on iTunes, you can grow your audience, gain additional exposure and bring new leads to your business with a very low investment in money or time.
Likewise, if you are passionate about a topic, chances are that you can talk for hours. If you enjoy the idea of expressing your opinion while having fun, podcasting may be in the cards for you.
Unfortunately, podcasting won’t be for everybody. Once listeners decide they like your show, they will expect future episodes, but unless you intend to commit on making more – podcasting may not be for you.
The idea of being able to share your opinion, without regulation from the FCC, is pure genius. While the government agency oversees television, radio and cable broadcasts, they do not control podcasts!
We belong to a world where variety is the spice of life and individuals have the freedom to listen to what they want, when they want. This makes podcasting a perfect medium to connect with people.
Individuals are tired of listening to the same old songs on the radio or watching reruns on television. Now they can choose the type of entertainment they want, conveniently through a push of a button.
If you currently have an article series published on your blog, you can now turn it into an audio series and make it available for download. Use your show to and engage with listeners, and solicit comments through your blog.
Or… simply record every one of your blog articles and turn it into an audio format. This makes your content available to auditory learners, and again, expands the reach of your brand.
