Marketing is all about building relationships and showing your audience that you’re willing to help them – namely, you got their backs. Think of the Internet as a huge popularity club. It’s really just like high school.
Don’t agree? Think back to senior high. Remember the gals and guys that walked the halls – bunched together, like they were thick as thieves?
You know who they are because this was the same group of kids that never let you walk in between them. If you were stepping towards them, you changed direction to the other side of the hallway.
Why did you do that? You did it because you weren’t a part of their clique. And, if you tried to walk in between them, you knew a confrontation would follow. Sound familiar?
A Universal Truth
Every school has an admired crowd within it. Actually, I take that back – there are numerous popularity clubs prancing the halls. The science geeks hung around the same technically-minded friends who all dressed and talked alike.
The same clique sat together in study hall. The drama club always went to the same pizza shop after practice. Even the cheerleaders dated the boys on the varsity football team.
I’d venture to say this behavior was universal. It doesn’t matter which school you attended – you were either a part of the IN crowd, or you weren’t. But why does this topic deserve an article?
Because the Internet is just like high school! Take for example, the many Facebook groups and pages, niche discussion forums, and twitter parties. They too, have their esteemed crowds, within each platform.
In school, if you were lucky enough to be a part of the well-liked crowd, everybody and their brother KNEW who you were; no doubt they secretly wished they were you!
That’s the power of being accepted and if you asked kids, they would tell you that they’d cut their right arm to be a part of this wonderful group. Just because we’re on the Internet, doesn’t mean anything has changed.
The only thing different, is location – location – location. But, I guarantee these kids (grown-ups) still have the mentality that it’s vital to FEEL important. So why not use this universal truth to your advantage?
I’m not going to tell you it’s easy, but it’s doable. Oh yeah? How?
Change Your Approach
Don’t look at Internet marketing from the perspective that it’s a platform to SELL, even though it is. Instead, look at it as a way to be a LEADER of an elite group of friends. You’ll have their backs and they’ll oblige in return.
I can’t tell you how often people email me to squeal on someone who isn’t using my material correctly or that another has hijacked an entire website. Friends have a habit of watching your back; their devotion is vast!
That kind of loyalty doesn’t just happen – it’s earned. Your willingness to help others and keep their best interests close to your heart has unlimited benefits. Treat your friends with the utmost respect.
Reach out to your prospective friends and let them know you have room for them in your IN crowd. Prove that you have their backs. Let them know you’re ready to serve!
Get busy my friend – make this happen, and I guarantee you’ll write your own ticket to success. Why? Because friends buy from friends – that’s another universal truth.
Your turn. Have you already started your IN crowd? Leave a comment and let me know!
