Ask entrepreneurs why they work from home and you’ll receive varied responses; yet, when you tally up the answers you may find the expression “more flexibility” floating to the top.
Gals want to be around to watch the kids grow and guys don’t want to be bridled to a corporate chair just to support the household.
Though, if truth be known, the majority of home-based professionals find themselves in a situation where they are working more hours from a home office than they did in the corporate world.
Instead of breaking for a leisurely lunch with a friend, they are settling for a quick bite at the computer. Before they realize it, the weekend trip with loved ones has been put off due to an important job that takes priority. What happened to all that flexibility?
Rearrange to Meet the Demands
It doesn’t matter how popular your business becomes, be it online or off, it’s important to maintain the flexibility that attracted you to work from home in the first place. Getting bogged down and constantly pushing things aside that matter most in life isn’t wise and tends to cause problems over time.
If the idea of working from home appealed to you because it would allow you to be around for your children, then follow a timetable that provides quality time to spend with them. Arrange your work schedule to attend special events and be flexible enough to meet the demands of your children.
Plan and Keep Your Promises
Some people choose to work from home so they can spend more time with a spouse or significant other. Spending too much time with your business and not enough with your partner can lead to serious relationship issues.
Don’t consume your time with business while the partner waits. If you made a date to spend time together, make it happen. Organize your work schedule around the commitments you made and plan to make the most of your relationship.
Schedule Time to Be You
Finally, don’t forget about YOU. Make a promise to take time out for yourself. I know we all say we will, but I’m telling you to do it! Take time off from your business to have fun and enjoy life! Pack your bags and take a trip to the beach without regrets.
Go to the gym in the middle of the day, visit the parlor and enjoy a massage, or drive to the grocery store for ice cream on an impulse. Whatever you decide, get in the habit of exercising your flexibility.
Many entrepreneurs get caught up in the satisfaction of working from home and forget who they are or why they wanted to work from home in the first place. Too much work and not enough play makes for an unhappy stay-at-home professional.
Stay focused on the areas of your life that need attention. Exercise your flexibility and take whatever action necessary to do so. You’ll cultivate happy and healthy children, a loving relationship with your partner, and stay on track with your home business endeavors.
